Das LGBTIQ+ leben ist wichtig

The project aims to raise awareness about tolerance and cultural diversity, as well as to conduct preventive and educational work against discrimination and homophobia in Berlin. Our goal is to support victims of homophobic attacks, including LGBTI individuals and refugees.

Issue

In recent years, homophobia in Berlin has reached new heights. According to a report monitoring homophobic and transphobic violence, since 2014 the number of crimes registered by the police related to hostile attitudes towards LGBTI* has been steadily increasing. In 2020, 377 crimes were registered, and in 2021 it was 456, which is the highest level in the history of observations. However, only 13% of victims report such incidents to the police.

These figures indicate the need for increased efforts by the city council to combat homophobia. Victims hesitate to approach the police due to fear of negative reactions, especially if their previous experiences with law enforcement have been negative.
